Dixie Queen Watermelon Seeds – Citrullus Lanatus Red Flesh Heirloom Variety

GROWING INSTRUCTIONS

1. Choose the Location: Select a warm planting area receiving at least 6–8 hours of direct sunlight daily with plenty of room for spreading vines.
2. Prepare the Soil: Work compost or well-aged organic matter into fertile, loose, well-draining soil before planting.
3. Sow the Seeds: Plant seeds approximately 2–2.5 cm deep after frost danger has passed and soil temperatures are consistently warm.
4. Provide Warmth: Maintain soil temperatures around 21–32°C (70–90°F) to encourage fast and consistent germination.
5. Thin the Seedlings: Once seedlings become established, retain the strongest plants and maintain approximately 90–120 cm between plants.
6. Water Consistently: Provide deep, regular watering during active vine growth, flowering, and early fruit development while avoiding prolonged waterlogging.
7. Support Pollination: Encourage bee activity and avoid disturbing flowers unnecessarily, as successful pollination is essential for proper watermelon development.
8. Protect Developing Fruit: Place straw, cardboard, or another dry material beneath developing melons when needed to reduce direct contact with damp soil.
9. Reduce Late Watering: As fruits approach maturity, avoid excessive irrigation to help maintain good fruit quality and reduce the risk of splitting.
10. Harvest at Maturity: Harvest when the tendril nearest the fruit dries, the ground spot becomes creamy yellow, and other maturity signs indicate the melon is ready.
