GROWING INSTRUCTIONS
- Choose the planting time: Direct sow in spring after the last frost once the soil has warmed and outdoor temperatures are consistently mild.
- Prepare the soil: Choose fertile, loose, well-draining soil and remove weeds before planting to reduce competition with young seedlings.
- Sow the seeds: Scatter or sow the tiny seeds approximately ⅛–¼ inch deep, covering them only lightly with fine soil.
- Maintain moisture: Keep the soil evenly moist during germination, using gentle watering to avoid washing away the small seeds.
- Thin the seedlings: Once plants develop several true leaves, thin them to approximately 10–18 inches apart for strong growth and seed production.
- Provide full sunlight: Grow in a location receiving at least 6–8 hours of direct sunlight daily for vigorous plants and well-developed seed heads.
- Water during growth: Water regularly during establishment; mature plants become more tolerant of short dry periods, though consistent moisture supports productivity.
- Harvest the grain: Cut mature flower heads when the seeds become firm and release readily when rubbed, then dry the heads thoroughly before threshing and storing the grain.
