GROWING INSTRUCTIONS
1. Prepare the Seeds: Clean seeds thoroughly and soak them in fresh water for approximately 24 hours before beginning dormancy treatment.
2. Treat Seed Dormancy: Silverberry seeds have strong dormancy and may benefit from scarification followed by an extended period of warm and cold, moist stratification.
3. Prepare the Soil: Use a loose, well-draining growing medium and moisten it evenly before sowing the treated seeds.
4. Sow the Seeds: Plant prepared seeds approximately 1–2 cm deep and gently cover them with the growing medium.
5. Maintain Moisture: Keep the medium consistently moist during germination without allowing it to remain saturated or waterlogged.
6. Allow Time to Germinate: Be patient because Elaeagnus commutata seeds can germinate slowly and irregularly, with some requiring an extended dormancy cycle.
7. Provide Sunlight: Once seedlings emerge, provide bright light and gradually introduce them to full sun as they become established.
8. Transplant Carefully: Move established seedlings into larger containers or a permanent well-draining outdoor location when they are strong enough to handle.
9. Space the Shrubs: Allow approximately 1.5–3 m between plants and consider the species' natural tendency to spread by underground suckers when selecting the site.
10. Maintain Established Plants: Water young shrubs regularly during establishment and prune or remove unwanted suckers when necessary to keep spreading growth within the desired area.
