GROWING INSTRUCTIONS
1. Prepare the Seeds: Clean seeds thoroughly if collected from berries and remove all remaining fruit pulp before beginning dormancy treatment.
2. Treat Seed Dormancy: Yaupon Holly seeds have complex dormancy and may require an extended period of warm followed by cold, moist stratification before germination occurs.
3. Prepare the Growing Medium: Use fertile, loose, moisture-retentive but well-draining seed-starting medium in deep containers or nursery trays.
4. Sow the Seeds: Plant seeds approximately 0.5–1 cm deep and lightly cover them with the prepared growing medium.
5. Maintain Moisture: Keep the medium consistently moist throughout stratification and germination without allowing it to become saturated or waterlogged.
6. Allow Time for Germination: Be patient because Yaupon Holly seeds can germinate very slowly and irregularly, sometimes requiring many months or more than one seasonal cycle.
7. Provide Light: Once seedlings emerge, provide bright filtered light and gradually increase sunlight exposure as young plants become established.
8. Transplant Carefully: Move established seedlings into individual containers and later transplant them into their permanent landscape location with minimal root disturbance.
9. Space and Maintain: Allow approximately 1.5–3 m between plants depending on intended use, and water regularly during the establishment period.
10. Allow Plants to Mature: Prune established plants as needed to develop the desired hedge, shrub, or small-tree form; seed-grown plants may be male or female, and female plants generally require pollen from a male plant for reliable berry production.
